What would a map of the planet's mycorrhizal fungal networks look like? In April 2022, we launched a massive sampling effort led by the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (spun.earth/), together with the Fungi Foundation (ffungi.org/) to develop maps of global mycorrhizal fungal diversity. We met with a Mapuche mushroom expert, and took soil cores to analyse fungal communities on the slopes of volcanoes, on dunes, in forests of monkey puzzle trees and desolate clearcuts, and vertical bushwhacked through thickets of bamboo, recording the sounds of the soil using buried microphones to compare activity in wildly different underground environment.
